During testimony before Congress, Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly confirmed the candidate favored by the United States to take over one of the most powerful international positions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The announcement came just weeks after the sudden departure of a European diplomat who reportedly clashed with Washington over a major American-backed energy project.

The controversy centers on a $1.5 billion natural gas pipeline initiative designed to transport American liquefied natural gas from Croatia into Bosnia and surrounding markets. Supporters argue the project would reduce the region’s dependence on Russian energy while expanding U.S. economic influence in a strategically important area.

The company awarded the project, AAFS Infrastructure and Energy, has attracted significant attention because of its leadership.
