They Tried To Bury This Bodycam Image

A single image pulled from newly released police bodycam footage has ignited outrage across social media, but some observers say the biggest controversy isn’t what appears in the photograph. It’s the growing effort to convince the public not to look at it at all.

The image comes from footage connected to the fatal stabbing of teenager Henry Nowak, a case that has already fueled a fierce debate about policing, public trust, and whether authorities treated a dying victim fairly.

Within hours of the screenshot spreading online, critics rushed to dismiss it. Some users labeled it “AI slop,” claiming the image had been artificially generated or manipulated beyond recognition. Others suggested it was being circulated as part of a political campaign designed to inflame tensions.

But supporters of the image’s authenticity argue that the backlash misses the larger issue entirely.

Canadian commentator Viva Frei became one of the most prominent voices pushing back against the claims. He posted additional screenshots taken directly from the original bodycam footage and argued that the viral image was simply enhanced to improve visibility.

According to Frei, sharpening and contrast adjustments may have made certain details stand out more clearly, but they did not change the underlying reality captured by the camera.
