A growing divide inside the Republican Party was put on full display this week after a group of House Republicans joined Democrats to approve a major Ukraine funding package that President Donald Trump had not endorsed.
The legislation, which cleared the House by a vote of 226-195, authorizes billions of dollars in additional support for Ukraine while imposing sweeping new economic penalties against Russia. The measure passed despite objections from House Republican leadership and amid Trump’s ongoing efforts to encourage direct peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
The vote immediately sparked criticism from many conservatives who viewed the legislation as a direct challenge to Trump’s foreign policy approach and another example of Washington establishment figures pushing America deeper into a costly overseas conflict.
At the center of the debate is Trump’s belief that a negotiated settlement remains the best path forward. Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin expressing interest in direct talks between the two leaders.
Trump welcomed the development.
“I think it would be great if they met,” the president said Monday while discussing the possibility of negotiations.
