Krugman’s “Purging” Comments Just Ignited a Firestorm

A recent video commentary from former New York Times columnist and economist Paul Krugman has triggered a wave of backlash after he used language suggesting what critics are calling a “political purge” of Trump supporters, including references to what he termed “deMAGAfication,” a phrase he compared to post–World War II denazification in Germany.

In the remarks, Krugman appeared to argue that the political movement aligned with President Donald Trump should be systematically dismantled and prevented from returning to power, language that many observers say crosses a line into advocating collective political punishment.

Krugman opened his vlog with a sweeping claim about the president’s mental fitness, stating, “The president of the United States is mentally ill, but everybody knows that,” immediately setting a combative tone for the rest of his commentary.

He continued escalating his criticism of Trump and his administration, saying, “If you have been following uh some of the news, you may know that Trump’s mental deterioration, which was obvious, has been obvious for quite a while, got even more extreme in the past few days,” while also describing the United States as “the world’s formerly greatest power” and labeling Trump as “a lunatic who has far more power than any previous president.”
