A social media account tied to Barack Obama’s White House suddenly came back to life this weekend after nearly a decade of silence.
But it wasn’t Obama staffers posting nostalgic photos.
Instead, followers were greeted by pro-Iranian propaganda celebrating one of America’s most notorious enemies.
The incident has raised serious questions about cybersecurity, government-linked digital assets, and how an account with millions of followers could be left vulnerable for years.
The Instagram account known as @obamawhitehouse had remained inactive since January 2017 when President Donald Trump first entered the White House. Despite sitting dormant for nearly nine years, the page still maintained a massive audience of approximately 2.4 million followers.
Then, without warning, the account began publishing unauthorized content.
Screenshots that quickly spread across social media showed artificial intelligence-generated images and content honoring Qasem Soleimani, the former commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force.
