The illegal immigrant accused of killing a young college student in Chicago is now facing yet another felony charge after authorities say he was caught with a dangerous homemade weapon while awaiting trial.
The latest development has reignited outrage over immigration enforcement failures and raised new questions about how a suspect accused of such a violent crime allegedly managed to obtain a weapon while locked inside one of the nation’s largest jail systems.
At the center of the case is 25-year-old Jose Medina, a Venezuelan national who federal officials say entered the United States illegally during the Biden administration and was permitted to remain in the country.
Medina is currently being held in connection with the March killing of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman, a freshman attending Loyola University Chicago.
The tragedy unfolded near Loyola’s Rogers Park campus when a masked gunman allegedly approached a group of students and opened fire. Authorities say Gorman was struck during the attack and died at the scene, sending shockwaves through the university community and beyond.
Following an intensive investigation, law enforcement identified Medina as the suspect and took him into custody. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, multiple aggravated assault offenses, and weapons-related crimes.
