California Governor Gavin Newsom is once again drawing national attention after proposing a dramatic new measure aimed at supporters of President Donald Trump.
The Democratic governor announced this week that California could impose a 100% state tax on any resident who receives money from Trump’s newly established Anti-Weaponization Fund, a move critics say amounts to government confiscation disguised as taxation.
The proposal immediately ignited backlash from conservatives who argue the governor is attempting to punish political opponents while California struggles with rising debt, budget problems, and public dissatisfaction over the state’s priorities.
Speaking during a Wednesday press conference, Newsom made it clear that his administration intends to pursue aggressive action against recipients of the fund.
“Anyone from California that receives any of those funds,” Newsom said. “We want to tax 100% of those proceeds and that’s an action the state of California can take. It’s an action we look forward to taking.”
