President Donald Trump sparked a fresh political firestorm this week after making remarks about Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that instantly reignited the battle inside the conservative movement over America First foreign policy, loyalty, and the growing influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups in Republican politics.
The comments came just hours after Rep. Thomas Massie’s stunning primary defeat in Kentucky, a race that shattered spending records after pro-Israel organizations and establishment Republican forces united to take down one of the last remaining anti-war conservatives in Congress.
Standing before reporters Wednesday morning, Trump stunned even longtime supporters when he joked about his popularity in Israel and his relationship with Netanyahu.
“I’m right now at 99 percent in Israel. I could run for Prime Minister. So maybe after I do this, I’ll go to Israel, run for Prime Minister.”
