California’s ongoing debate over fairness in girls’ sports has erupted into fresh controversy after a weekend track and field meet left athletes, parents, and political leaders sharply divided — and a new “co-champion” system sparked national attention.

At the center of the storm is California Governor Gavin Newsom, who previously told activist Charlie Kirk on his podcast that it was “deeply unfair” for biological males to compete against women in sports. Despite that acknowledgment, state policy has continued to allow such participation, setting the stage for a weekend outcome that critics say underscores a growing contradiction between words and policy.

What unfolded at the CIF Southern Section finals has now become a flashpoint far beyond California’s borders.

AB Hernandez dominated all three jumping events on Saturday — the high jump, long jump, and triple jump — winning each by significant margins. Under a pilot program reintroduced specifically for this postseason, California altered its medal structure so that the highest-finishing female competitor would be elevated one place on the podium when a biological male competitor finished ahead.
