California Democratic Rep. Julia Brownley has officially announced she will not seek re-election after serving seven terms in Congress, marking another notable departure in what is quickly becoming a wave of retirements ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Her decision comes as Washington is already bracing for significant turnover. Across the House of Representatives, more than three dozen lawmakers have now confirmed they will not run again, signaling a growing reshaping of the political landscape as both parties prepare for a highly competitive election cycle.
Brownley’s retirement also makes her the second House Democrat from California to step aside this cycle, further opening the door for a contested race in a state that continues to play a central role in national politics.
She currently represents California’s 26th Congressional District, a coastal region that includes most of Ventura County and a portion of Los Angeles County. Following recent redistricting changes and California’s Proposition 50, the district has become more solidly Democratic, a shift that could intensify the battle among Democrats seeking to succeed her.
