President Donald Trump campaigned on bringing down energy prices and restoring American “energy dominance.” But with gas prices surging nationwide and tensions in the Middle East pushing oil markets into chaos, Americans are starting to ask a brutal question: where is the relief they were promised?
Now Energy Secretary Chris Wright has floated an idea that instantly reignited one of Washington’s oldest political fights — suspending the federal gas tax.
And Democrats are already preparing to weaponize it.
After months of insisting prices would fall, the administration suddenly sounds far less certain about what comes next.
Back in March, Wright confidently predicted there was a “very good chance” Americans would see gasoline drop below $3 a gallon by summer. Instead, the national average has exploded to roughly $4.52 per gallon, while diesel prices have climbed above $5.60 as instability surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz continues hammering global energy markets.
As the crisis deepened, Wright quietly changed his tune.
