For years, late-night television sold itself as the voice of America’s cultural elite. Hosts mocked conservatives, celebrated Democrats, and treated their audiences like members of an exclusive political club. But now one of the biggest names in the business is heading for the exit, and Senator John Kennedy says the reason is painfully simple: Americans stopped watching.
The collapse of Stephen Colbert has become one of the biggest media stories of the year after CBS officially pulled the plug on his struggling late-night program. While network executives blamed financial losses and declining ratings, Kennedy went much further during an appearance on Fox News host Will Cain’s program.
And he did not bother sugarcoating any of it.
Kennedy mocked the longtime late-night host over his relationship with former President Barack Obama after Obama recently appeared on Colbert’s show to lecture Americans about political “norms” and the state of democracy.
According to Kennedy, the entire exchange looked more like mutual admiration than serious political discussion.
