Russian President Vladimir Putin is suddenly signaling that the bloody war in Ukraine may finally be entering its final chapter, raising fresh questions about whether a major breakthrough is quietly taking shape behind the scenes.
The Kremlin strongman made the stunning remarks Sunday following Russia’s massive Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, where military hardware rolled through Red Square and the Russian government marked the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II.
But it wasn’t the parade that grabbed international attention.
It was what Putin said afterward.
“I think that the matter is coming to an end, but it is a serious matter,” Putin told reporters when asked about the ongoing war with Ukraine.
That statement instantly fueled speculation that backchannel negotiations involving the Trump administration may be making more progress than either side has publicly admitted.
