As tensions with Iran continue to simmer, President Donald Trump is making it crystal clear that the United States is prepared to escalate if Tehran refuses to come to the table and finalize a new agreement aimed at stabilizing the region and preventing a nuclear crisis.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House before departing for his golf club in Sterling, Virginia, Trump hinted that the administration is already preparing contingency plans in case negotiations collapse.
“We’ll go a different route if everything doesn’t get signed up, buttoned up,” Trump said. “I think Project Freedom is good, but I think we have other ways of doing it also.”
The president then delivered an even more ominous warning directed squarely at Iran’s leadership.
“We may go back to Project Freedom if things don’t happen, but it’ll be Project Freedom Plus, meaning Project Freedom plus other things.”
The comments come after the Trump administration temporarily suspended its aggressive naval escort campaign in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic oil chokepoint that has become the center of a dangerous military standoff between the United States and Iran.
