NASA’s 2029 Asteroid Alert Just Dropped

Scientists have given it a name that sounds like mythology, but NASA says the reality behind it is anything but fiction. An asteroid officially named after Apophis, the ancient Egyptian god associated with chaos and destruction, is now at the center of one of the most closely watched space events in modern history.

According to NASA tracking data, the massive space rock is expected to make an extraordinarily close pass by Earth on April 13, 2029. Measuring roughly the size of the Eiffel Tower, Apophis will sweep through a region of space closer than many of humanity’s most critical satellites. For a brief moment, it will be visible to the naked eye across parts of the globe—an astronomical flyby unlike anything recorded in human history.

The name “Apophis” now feels less like symbolism and more like a warning label, even though scientists stress there is no impact risk. NASA has spent two decades refining orbital models, and officials maintain confidence that the asteroid will safely pass Earth without incident. Still, the sheer proximity of the encounter has placed it firmly in the category of rare cosmic events.
