Nearly a year after President Donald Trump raised alarms about what he described as potentially “fake crime numbers” coming out of Washington, D.C., a major internal scandal is now unfolding inside the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), putting senior leadership under scrutiny and prompting disciplinary action against multiple officers.
According to officials, 13 MPD officers have been placed on leave, with some already facing termination, as investigators dig deeper into allegations that crime statistics may have been manipulated. The developing probe is now raising serious questions about transparency and accountability inside the department.
MPD Interim Chief Jeffrey Carroll confirmed the scope of the investigation and its origins, noting that federal authorities initially flagged the issue.
“Our Internal Affairs Bureau has completed an investigation into crime reporting,” Carroll said. The MPD did not immediately respond to a Tuesday request for comment. “This investigation was reported — it was referred to us earlier this year from the United States Attorney’s Office.”
