Rep. Maria Salazar has spent weeks aggressively promoting legislation that would grant legal status to millions of illegal immigrants, presenting the measure as the Republican Party’s path forward on immigration.
But after all the media appearances, interviews, and lobbying efforts, one response from Border Czar Tom Homan appeared to bring the campaign to a halt almost instantly.
Outside the White House on Tuesday evening, Homan was approached by a reporter from the Daily Signal and asked directly about Salazar’s so-called DIGNIDAD Act, a proposal that would offer green cards to millions of illegal immigrants classified as DREAMers while extending work permits to millions more.
Homan’s answer was short, direct, and unmistakable.
“The president has been clear on day one, and so have I. No amnesty.”
That was it.
No lengthy explanation. No policy memo. No carefully scripted statement.
