A developing case out of Minnesota is fueling renewed debate over election security, voter eligibility, and the unintended consequences of sweeping policy changes signed into law by Governor Tim Walz.
State and federal authorities have charged a 39-year-old noncitizen, Mukeshkumar Somabhai Chaudhari, in connection with illegally casting a ballot in the 2024 election. The case is drawing national attention not just because of the violation itself, but because of how the individual allegedly gained access to the system.
According to investigators, Chaudhari obtained a Minnesota driver’s license under a recently enacted law that allows residents to apply regardless of immigration status. From there, the state’s automatic voter registration system flagged his information, triggering the mailing of a voter registration form to his address.
He completed the form. He voted.
And as prosecutors now allege, he was not legally eligible to do so.
