A tragic and deeply disturbing scene unfolded in Northern Virginia early Thursday morning after former Democratic Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and his wife were discovered dead inside their Annandale residence in what authorities are describing as an apparent murder-suicide.
Law enforcement officers were dispatched to the home shortly after midnight after receiving a 911 call connected to a death investigation and domestic disturbance. What they found inside stunned the local community and sent shockwaves through Virginia political circles.
According to multiple reports, officers located Justin Fairfax, 47, and his wife, Cerina Fairfax, deceased inside the family home. Investigators quickly launched a preliminary review of the evidence, and early findings indicate the former lieutenant governor allegedly shot his wife before taking his own life.
Authorities told local outlet WJLA-TV that detectives believe the violence began in the basement of the residence. Investigators say Cerina Fairfax was killed there before Justin Fairfax went upstairs to a bedroom, where he reportedly turned the same firearm on himself.
