That ritual was finally scrapped in 2025, giving passengers a long-awaited break and speeding up security lines nationwide.
Now, Senator Tammy Duckworth is attempting to bring it back—and her reasoning is raising serious questions.
A Security Warning—Or Political Timing?
Duckworth recently sent a formal request to the Transportation Security Administration urging officials to immediately reinstate the shoes-off policy. She described the rollback as a dangerous move, warning it could expose vulnerabilities in airport screening.
In her letter, Duckworth called the decision to end the requirement a “reckless act” that “increases the risk of a terrorist smuggling a dangerous item onto a flight.”
