A political firestorm is tearing through California’s Democrat establishment after shocking allegations surfaced against Rep. Eric Swalwell, triggering a rapid collapse of support from within his own party.
Once considered a serious contender in California’s gubernatorial race, Swalwell now finds himself politically isolated as top Democrats scramble to distance themselves from the growing scandal.
The controversy erupted after a report published by the San Francisco Chronicle detailed accusations from a former congressional staffer who claimed she was subjected to inappropriate conduct during her time working in Swalwell’s office.
According to the report, the woman said her professional relationship with the congressman took a troubling turn shortly after she was hired in 2019 at just 21 years old. She alleged that Swalwell began pursuing her early on, eventually leading to encounters that she claims crossed serious lines.
The Chronicle reported the following:
“A woman who worked for nearly two years for Rep. Eric Swalwell, a leading candidate for California governor, said she had sexual encounters with him while he was her boss and alleged he twice sexually assaulted her when she was too intoxicated to consent,”
