For weeks, Iranian officials publicly insisted they would not sit down with Washington under any circumstances. The message was repeated over and over, projecting defiance and strength. But what unfolded in the strategic waters of the Strait of Hormuz tells a very different story.
According to Trump, Iran allowed a group of oil tankers to pass through the vital shipping route in what he described as a deliberate gesture. The move raised eyebrows immediately, especially given the region’s history of tension and disruption. Then came Trump’s response, delivered in front of his Cabinet and captured on live television.
“They said, ‘To show you the fact that we’re real and solid and we’re there, we’re going to let you have eight boats of oil,'” Trump recounted.
That was not the end of it. Two additional tankers followed, bringing the total to ten. Trump did not treat the development as routine. Instead, he framed it as clear evidence that pressure is working and that Tehran may be signaling weakness rather than strength.
“They are begging to make a deal,” he told reporters. “They’re lousy fighters but they’re great negotiators, and they are begging to work out a deal.”
