This is the Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas—a state where white evangelicals make up about a quarter of the electorate and voted nearly 90% for Trump in 2024. Republicans recognized immediately the opening Talarico handed them.
Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas didn’t hold back: “Beto O’Rourke may have been a total FREAK, but even he didn’t say something as bizarre as ‘God is nonbinary.'”
He isn’t wrong. Talarico is essentially O’Rourke with a seminary degree—a charismatic Democrat who once built a national following through viral clips, convinced party elites he could win statewide, and is now giving Republicans attack ads in real time. In 2018, O’Rourke came within three points of Ted Cruz. Then he “revealed” his true beliefs, and voters buried him by 11 points in the next race.
Republicans Already Have Talarico’s Record on Tape
The “God is nonbinary” quote makes headlines—but Talarico’s full record will terrify voters.
From the Texas House floor, he declared there are six biological sexes. Six. From a state legislator in Texas.
He used the Virgin Mary’s story to defend abortion rights, arguing that Mary’s consent to carry Jesus proves abortion is a Christian value.
He went further, telling a national podcast that Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, atheists, and agnostics are “more Christ-like” than Christians who hold conservative political views.
His policy positions are equally radical: he wants to abolish ICE, codify Roe v. Wade into federal law, and scrap the Senate filibuster so Chuck Schumer can pass legislation with just 51 votes.
On the podcast this week, Talarico compared himself to Raphael Warnock and said he’ll follow “the same playbook” to flip Texas. Republicans couldn’t be happier about that framing.
The NRSC called Talarico “an open borders, Trump-hating radical who can never be allowed to set foot in the U.S. Senate.” GOP consultant Brendan Steinhauser explained it clinically: Texas is still conservative, and Republicans will spend every dollar ensuring voters know exactly what Talarico believes before November.
Attorney General Ken Paxton went even further in his primary night speech: “a far-left radical who wants to abolish ICE, says God is non-binary – I’m not even sure I know what that means – and thinks Christians are commanded to put boys in girls’ sports.”
Donald Trump weighed in, calling Talarico “a terribly weak candidate” who is “more woke than even the very highly untalented Jasmine Crockett.”
Talarico’s entire campaign hinges on convincing religious conservatives that his faith mirrors theirs. Explaining to a podcast host why God has no gender—while being asked about God’s anatomy—is not how you earn that trust.
Democrats insist Texas is just one charismatic candidate away from turning blue. They just nominated a seminary student who believes God has no gender, argues Mary’s pregnancy proves abortion is holy, and claims conservative Christians are less Christ-like than atheists.
That’s not a breakthrough candidate. That’s a November disaster waiting to happen.
