Then vs Now: Daytona’s Shocking Transformation

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

Last weekend, Daytona Beach became the center of a very different kind of national attention. Instead of music and celebration, headlines were dominated by violence, panic, and law enforcement crackdowns.

Authorities reported five separate shooting incidents over the course of the weekend. One of the most serious involved South Daytona officer Jake Fessenden, who was shot twice after a suspect opened fire following a vehicle crash on Interstate 95. He is expected to recover, while the suspect remains in critical condition.

The violence was not isolated to a single moment. The trouble began Friday night when a shot was fired during a fight at a local bar. Shortly after, another shooting occurred near a gym just blocks from the beach. By Saturday, additional incidents unfolded in crowded areas near popular establishments, further escalating tensions.

In total, law enforcement made 133 arrests across the region, with dozens occurring directly in Daytona Beach. The situation grew so volatile that even ordinary visitors found themselves caught in the chaos.

One eyewitness, Kissy Derito, described the scene in blunt terms: “Twerking, dancing, stopping traffic, cussing people, flipping people off, stopping everyone, screaming. It was insane. Stopping traffic, you couldn’t move, you couldn’t go forward, back, nothing.”

Families visiting the area for the first time reportedly found themselves trapped and unsure of how to respond. In one instance, a father questioned whether they should leave entirely as disorder unfolded around them.

Perhaps most alarming was the revelation about what triggered a massive stampede on the beach. According to officials, the panic was not caused by an actual shooting. Instead, individuals in the crowd deliberately popped water bottles to imitate gunfire, sending thousands of people running in fear.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed the disturbing tactic, describing a situation where fear itself was manipulated for entertainment.

The comparison to Panama City Beach offers a glimpse into what could come next. That city faced its own breaking point years ago after a series of serious crimes during spring break season. Local leaders responded with strict measures, including alcohol bans on the beach and tighter law enforcement controls. Over time, those changes reduced crime and helped reshape the area into a more family friendly destination.

Now, officials in Daytona appear to be moving in a similar direction. Chitwood has already taken steps to crack down on unauthorized events and enforce stricter penalties. A special event zone has been established, bringing increased fines and immediate enforcement actions.

“Everyone we arrest will not be given a ticket,” Chitwood said. “You will physically be removed from the venue and processed at another venue.”

However, the response has not been without controversy.

Chitwood indicated that he had pushed for stronger measures before the weekend began but was unable to secure full cooperation from city leadership. Specifically, authorization for expanded enforcement was not granted in time.

City Manager Deric C. Feacher faced questions after the events unfolded but declined to engage in a detailed explanation. Instead, he stated, “Rather than continuing the negative narrative on what didn’t happen last weekend, we are focused on cooperation, public safety and what’s best for Daytona Beach moving forward.”

Adding to the concern, City Commissioner Stacy Cantu revealed that there had been no prior communication about the anticipated crowds. No warnings, no coordination, and no preparation were shared ahead of the influx of visitors.

The result was a weekend that many now see as a turning point.

What was once a defining piece of American youth culture has become a flashpoint for debates about safety, leadership, and accountability. With new events already being promoted online, the pressure is now squarely on local officials to decide what the future of Daytona Beach will look like.

The viral footage may fade from headlines, but the questions it raised are not going away anytime soon.
