A horrifying shooting at Old Dominion University has reignited a fierce debate over gun-free zones after an ROTC cadet reportedly stopped an armed attacker using nothing more than a knife.
The incident unfolded Thursday morning inside Constant Hall at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. What began as a routine ROTC class quickly turned into chaos when a gunman entered the room and opened fire.
Authorities say the attacker asked whether the classroom was hosting an ROTC session. When someone confirmed it was, he immediately began shooting.
The attack left one person dead and two others wounded before students managed to stop the gunman.
The instructor, a retired U.S. Army officer, was struck during the attack and later died from his injuries at a nearby hospital. Two ROTC students were also shot and injured in the incident.
But before the situation could spiral further out of control, a dramatic and courageous response from one cadet changed everything.
