American intelligence officials are sounding the alarm after intercepting a mysterious encrypted transmission believed to have originated from inside Iran, raising fears that sleeper operatives scattered across foreign countries could soon be activated.
According to a report first highlighted by ABC News, analysts discovered what investigators described as a potential “operational trigger” message intended for covert operatives living quietly abroad. These operatives, commonly referred to as sleeper cells, are individuals embedded in foreign societies who live ordinary lives until they receive instructions to carry out attacks.
The intercepted signal reportedly surfaced shortly after the dramatic escalation in the Middle East that followed the death of Iran’s longtime supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian leader was killed in a powerful joint U.S.-Israeli strike on Tehran on February 28, a move that has reshaped the leadership structure inside the Islamic Republic and sent shockwaves through the region.
Following Khamenei’s death, power in Tehran quickly shifted to his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has now reportedly stepped into the role of supreme leader. The rapid transition of authority has only heightened tensions as Iran confronts military pressure abroad and internal uncertainty at home.
