Man Says Iran Threatened Him Into Trump Plot

A dramatic courtroom moment unfolded this week in New York as a Pakistani businessman accused of attempting to orchestrate political assassinations told jurors he was pressured by Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard to participate in the scheme.

The defendant, 47 year old Asif Merchant, is facing serious federal charges tied to an alleged murder for hire conspiracy targeting multiple high profile American political figures. Among those allegedly named in the plot were President Donald Trump, then President Joe Biden, and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.

But Merchant’s testimony offered a stunning defense. He insisted that he was never acting out of personal motivation and instead claimed he was coerced by Iranian operatives who threatened his family.

“My family was under threat, and I had to do this,” Merchant testified through an Urdu interpreter. “I was not wanting to do this so willingly.”

The case centers on events prosecutors say unfolded in 2024, when Merchant allegedly attempted to recruit individuals to carry out a political assassination inside the United States. Federal investigators say the scheme began to unravel after he unknowingly discussed the alleged murder plot with an informant.
