A political firestorm is engulfing Texas’ 23rd Congressional District after embattled Rep. Tony Gonzales abruptly admitted to an affair he spent months denying while attacking his Republican challenger, gun rights advocate Brandon Herrera.

The stunning reversal came just hours after primary voters sent a clear warning shot to the incumbent. Now the controversy is escalating into a full-blown ethics investigation as the two men head toward a high-stakes runoff election scheduled for May 26.
For months, Gonzales publicly dismissed allegations surrounding an affair with a staff member as baseless attacks. He repeatedly accused Herrera and others of spreading false claims and attempting to smear a deceased woman for political gain.
But following the March 4 primary results, Gonzales changed his story.
Appearing on conservative radio host Joe Pags’ program, Gonzales acknowledged the relationship, describing it as “a mistake” and “a lapse in judgment.” The admission immediately reignited criticism from Herrera and other conservatives who had raised concerns long before the election.
