Judge Sides With ICE. Democrats Stunned

A federal judge in Washington, D.C. has declined to immediately block the Trump administration’s new policy requiring members of Congress to provide advance notice before entering Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities. The ruling is already fueling outrage from Democrats, who claim the move is an attempt to shield ICE from scrutiny as immigration enforcement ramps up nationwide.

U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb ruled Monday that Democratic lawmakers challenging the policy failed to use the proper legal mechanism to stop it. As a result, the Trump administration remains free, for now, to enforce a seven-day notice requirement for congressional visits to ICE facilities.

The case stems from a confrontation earlier this month in Minneapolis, where Rep. Ilhan Omar and several other Minnesota Democrats were denied entry to an ICE facility and told to leave after refusing to comply with the new policy. The lawmakers said they were attempting to conduct oversight, but ICE officials cited the administration’s updated rules.

Attorneys representing the Democrats urged Judge Cobb to intervene. She declined, explaining that the legal motion filed was not the correct way to challenge the policy. Importantly, the judge emphasized that her ruling did not validate the policy itself.
