A decades-old mystery has finally been solved in the Pacific Northwest. Skeletal remains that washed ashore on a Washington state beach nearly 20 years ago have been confirmed to belong to Clarence Edwin “Ed” Asher, a former small-town mayor who vanished during a fishing trip in 2006.
Asher disappeared in September 2006 while fishing in Tillamook Bay, a quiet inlet along Oregon’s coast. The Coast Guard launched a thorough search but ended operations just one day later on September 6, 2006. At the time, authorities feared the worst, as The Astorian reported.
The former mayor of Fossil, Oregon, was 72 years old when he went missing. Investigators were told by his wife that Asher did not wear a life jacket and could not swim, leading officials to conclude he likely drowned.
Just two months later, in November 2006, skeletal remains were found on a remote beach near Taholah, a small village on the Quinault Indian Reservation roughly 185 miles north of Tillamook Bay. Despite the discovery, identifying the remains proved elusive.
