DNA Just Solved the KFC Kidnapping Case Everyone Forgot

After more than four decades of unanswered questions, one of East Texas’ most disturbing cold cases has finally been brought to a close. Investigators with the Texas Department of Public Safety have officially identified the third and final suspect connected to the notorious 1983 KFC murders that horrified Rusk County and stunned the nation.

Authorities announced that advanced DNA technology and modern genealogical research led them to Devan Riggs, a previously unidentified suspect believed to have played a role in the brutal crime. While the breakthrough delivers long-awaited clarity, it comes with a sobering caveat: Riggs has been deceased for more than ten years, meaning no further arrests or prosecutions will follow.

Even so, DPS officials say the identification marks a critical milestone. With all known perpetrators now accounted for, the case has been formally closed—ending one of Texas’ longest-running and most haunting murder investigations.
