“Countries with rampant corruption, lack of government control, or who are undermined by radical terrorist groups engaging in heinous crimes are unable to provide assurances that the foreign nationals from their countries will not bring these criminal enterprises to the United States,”² Jackson stated.
Then came her mic-drop moment: “The Trump Administration will always choose America First.”³
The policy changes are significant. Full travel bans were imposed on Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, Syria, and documents issued by the Palestinian Authority.⁴ Laos and Sierra Leone moved from partial restrictions to full bans after tourist visa overstays exceeded 16%.⁵ Fifteen additional countries—including Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe—face partial restrictions on tourist, business, and student visas.⁶ The new rules go into effect January 1, increasing the number of affected countries from 19 to 39.⁷
Timing was no accident. The restrictions followed the murder of 20-year-old National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom on Thanksgiving Eve by Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who also critically wounded 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe.⁸⁹
Lakanwal was tied to a CIA-backed “Zero Unit” in Afghanistan, paramilitary groups known for brutality.¹⁰ The Biden administration brought him to the U.S. in September 2021 after the Taliban takeover, and he slipped through asylum approvals in early 2025—before Trump froze Afghan asylum applications following the shooting.¹¹
Overstay data also played a role. Nationals from Burkina Faso overstay tourist visas at 9.16%, Laos at 28.34%, Niger at 13.41%, Sierra Leone at 16.48%, and Syria at 7.09%.¹²¹³ The proclamation also highlighted active terrorist threats. U.S.-designated groups operate in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and “have murdered American citizens,” while ongoing operations in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger were cited as further justification.¹⁴¹⁶
Even Syria, despite recent diplomatic engagement, faces restrictions because it “still lacks an adequate central authority for issuing passports or civil documents.”¹⁷ The only success story: Turkmenistan, which lifted restrictions after productive engagement with the U.S.¹⁸ Lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, diplomats, and athletes are exempt.¹⁹
Predictably, Democrats erupted. Laurie Ball Cooper of the International Refugee Assistance Project labeled the expansion “another shameful attempt to demonize people simply for where they are from.”²⁰ Representative Rashida Tlaib called it “racist cruelty” meant to “alter the demographics of the country.”²¹
But the timing and context tell a different story. Trump is protecting Americans after a tragic attack on U.S. soil, while Democrats lecture voters about border security being “racist.” Biden allowed nearly 10 million illegal border crossers over four years, while Trump deployed National Guard troops to safeguard Washington, D.C.
The White House made its priorities crystal clear: America First. And voters have already shown which approach they prefer.
