The man who fearlessly tackled an armed terrorist during a deadly Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach has now been identified as Ahmed al-Ahmed, a local fruit shop owner who happened to be nearby when chaos erupted. His split-second decision to act is being credited with saving countless lives during what authorities have classified as a targeted terror attack against the Jewish community.
The shooting occurred during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event, a large public gathering celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. More than 1,000 people had assembled near Archer Park in North Bondi when gunfire suddenly shattered the festive atmosphere, turning a peaceful religious celebration into a scene of terror.
The attack began shortly after 6:30 p.m. local time. Witnesses initially reported hearing what sounded like firecrackers or popping noises, only to realize moments later they were hearing gunshots. Panic spread rapidly as sustained gunfire echoed across the beachfront area.
Investigators say two gunmen armed with semi-automatic rifles and shotguns positioned themselves on a pedestrian footbridge connecting Campbell Parade and Archer Park. The bridge overlooked the gathering area, which sits close to a children’s playground and several busy restaurants—making the location particularly vulnerable.
