Stockton’s Vice Mayor Jason Lee expressed deep sorrow and frustration, releasing a statement that captured the emotional toll felt across the community. In a Facebook post, he wrote, “Tonight, my heart is heavy in a way that’s hard to put into words. As Vice Mayor of Stockton — and as someone who grew up in this community — I am devastated and angry to learn about the mass shooting at a child’s birthday party. An ice cream shop should never be a place where families fear for their lives.”

He went on to share how personally the situation hit him, stating, “Violence touched my life as a young person, and seeing our own children, parents, and neighbors go through this shakes me deeply. Stockton is my home. These are our families. This is our community…Our community deserves to know the truth, and the families impacted deserve justice and every resource available to support them.”

At first, media outlets reported that the tragedy took place inside a Dairy Queen. That detail was later corrected—investigators now say the violence erupted at a nearby banquet hall, not the ice cream shop. The confusion only added to the chaotic aftermath as families searched for loved ones and officials worked to secure the area.

As of late Sunday, no arrests had been made. Authorities confirmed that the person or people responsible fled before police arrived. The FBI has stepped in to support the investigation, adding federal resources as local law enforcement works to track down the attackers.

Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi also responded publicly, praising the swift actions of first responders who rushed into a volatile, unclear situation. In her Facebook post, she wrote, “Our first responders acted quickly, securing multiple scenes and providing immediate medical aid. Their professionalism reflects the very best of our city.”

She added that city leadership is fully mobilized, stating, “As Mayor, I am ensuring every necessary resource is available and that our city supports this effort at every level. Right now, our focus must remain on the victims, their families, and the safety of the community.”

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office also issued a call for public assistance, stressing just how important community cooperation will be in solving this crime. In their statement, they wrote, “We are urging anyone with information, video footage, or who may have witnessed any part of this incident to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office immediately. Community assistance is vital in helping us identify those responsible and bring justice to the victims and their loved ones.”

As investigators piece together what happened, Stockton residents are demanding accountability and praying for the victims still fighting for their lives. A celebration meant for children has now become a tragic symbol of a city pleading for safety, justice, and answers.
