The FBI’s rapid strike on October 31 prevented what a senior Bureau official later described as “one of the most deadly plots faced by the FBI in recent memory.”
Two twenty-year-olds from Dearborn, Michigan, Mohamed Ali and Majed Mahmoud, now face charges ranging from material support to ISIS to moving weapons for terror purposes.
But Michigan was only the spark.
The terror network was larger and more coordinated than anyone realized
Once investigators dug deeper, they uncovered a sprawling network that crossed multiple states and then jumped the Atlantic.
Eight suspects were eventually taken into custody across the United States, including individuals in New Jersey and Washington state.
Even more alarming was what investigators uncovered overseas. At least six co-conspirators in the United Kingdom and Sweden were communicating with the American suspects about joining ISIS as foreign fighters.
Another FBI official emphasized the magnitude of the case, stating, “Those eight arrests, and ones that have happened around the world are some of the most impactful arrests that have happened in the counterterrorism program in recent years.”
Patel explained that agents monitored the network closely before choosing the exact moment to take the entire operation down. “We arrested the people who were the overt actors immediately, while constantly surveilling the people in New Jersey and Seattle,” Patel said. “We arrested them in a coordinated fashion thereafter to take down the entire network.”
International arrests linked to the same conspiracy remain sealed as prosecutions continue in both America and Europe.
ISIS propaganda and recruitment spreading inside U.S. communities
Court documents reveal that the suspects repeatedly referenced some of the worst terror attacks of the last decade, including the Pulse nightclub massacre and the Paris attacks. One juvenile suspect even contacted a radical Islamic ideologue to seek religious approval before carrying out the killings.
Encrypted channels were used to exchange ISIS propaganda and discuss potential attack dates that extremists would celebrate in the future.
Among those arrested was nineteen-year-old Saed Ali Mirreh of Washington state, who had already been investigated in 2023 for engaging in ISIS-related conversations with a Canadian extremist later arrested by authorities. He admitted to consuming ISIS propaganda yet was released without charges. By July 2025, the FBI found he was messaging multiple ISIS supporters overseas about “jihad against the kuffar” and martyrdom.
New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner confirmed the authenticity of the threat. “This was the real deal, and we were really concerned,” she said, adding that radicalization spans every economic background. She warned that online connections are easily moving into real-world coordination. “Associations that start off in the digital realm are transferring into the physical realm, which just makes it a lot easier to coordinate these kinds of plans.”
A deadly warning for the country
This case exposes a brutal truth Washington refuses to acknowledge. The pipeline of ISIS recruitment is thriving inside American cities. These were not foreign infiltrators slipping across the southern border last week. These were American teenagers radicalized through Instagram accounts and encrypted group chats, armed with legally purchased rifles, and coached by ISIS handlers in Europe.
While Biden insisted the border crisis was harmless and that terrorism threats were exaggerated, ISIS-inspired cells set up shop in Michigan, New Jersey, and Washington. It took Patel and Bongino’s fast action, and a rare full-force FBI operation, to stop a massacre that would have changed the country forever.
America is now learning the hard way what happens when an administration ignores terror while extremists expand their recruiting networks right under its nose.
