Back in 1995, General Motors quietly unloaded its rare earth magnet division, Magnaquench. The buyer looked American on paper, led by Archibald Cox Jr., the son of the famous Watergate prosecutor. But the price tag — a measly $70 million — hinted something was off.

It was. Behind the curtain, two Chinese state-owned giants were bankrolling the entire deal. San Huan New Material and China National Non-Ferrous Metals Import and Export Corporation were the true owners, both with direct ties to the family of former Chinese premier Deng Xiaoping.
