In a move that sent shockwaves through Washington, a federal judge just shut down the criminal cases against two of Donald Trump’s most notorious political enemies, former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The courtroom reversal has instantly ignited a firestorm about the Biden-era Justice Department, the bureaucracy Trump has been fighting for years, and the growing list of officials installed through questionable appointments.
U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie dropped the hammer on Monday, ruling that the prosecutor hand-picked to finally bring Comey and Letitia James to justice was never legally eligible to hold the position in the first place. That prosecutor, Lindsey Halligan, had been pushed forward to take on the long-delayed cases — only for the judge to pull the plug in one sweep.
Currie didn’t mince words. She dismissed both indictments without prejudice, meaning the cases aren’t dead forever. The Justice Department could revive them by bringing in a prosecutor who actually meets the legal requirements. Whether the Biden administration wants to pick that fight again is another question entirely.
