Days before the event, Newsom began attacking the Trump administration, claiming the Marine Corps’ live-fire demonstration posed “safety risks.” He alleged that artillery rounds could endanger civilians, despite official Marine Corps assurances that all exercises were being conducted “on approved training ranges” under “established safety protocols.” The Corps clearly stated that “no public highways or transportation routes will be closed.”
Anyone familiar with Camp Pendleton knows the Marines conduct live-fire exercises all year to maintain combat readiness. It’s standard military training. But Newsom saw a chance to grandstand and accuse the Trump administration of “putting ego over responsibility.”
“The President is putting his ego over responsibility with this disregard for public safety,” Newsom said. “Firing live rounds over a busy highway isn’t just wrong — it’s dangerous.”
Despite the Marine Corps confirming that the event posed no danger, Newsom ordered the California Highway Patrol to shut down 17 miles of Interstate 5 — one of the busiest highways in America — during the celebration. The decision stranded thousands of motorists for hours, caused massive traffic jams, and disrupted $94 million in daily freight between San Diego and Orange counties.
Families missed events, workers missed shifts, and emergency services were delayed — all because Gavin Newsom wanted to make a political statement against the Trump administration.
Vice President Vance’s office blasted the stunt:
“Governor Newsom is deliberately spreading Fake News to Californians to fearmonger and score cheap political points,” said Vance press secretary Taylor Van Kirk.
Communications Director William Martin added: “If Gavin Newsom wants to oppose the training exercises that ensure our Armed Forces are the deadliest and most lethal fighting force in the world, then he can go right ahead.”
California Republicans erupted over the unnecessary disruption. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond reminded the public that Marines “have been firing live rounds and training beneath I-5 for over 50 years — without closing the freeway.”
“This isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s going to cause medical emergencies to be delayed, workers to miss shifts and families to have their plans and events ruined,” Desmond posted.
Congressman Darrell Issa didn’t hold back, calling the decision “a spiteful publicity stunt” and “a disgusting abuse of power.”
During the event, a single artillery round malfunctioned, detonating prematurely and scattering small fragments. A piece of shrapnel struck an unoccupied CHP vehicle — no one was injured. The Marines immediately suspended firing and opened an investigation.
“We are aware of the report of a possible airborne detonation of a 155mm artillery round outside the designated impact area,” said Marine Corps spokesperson Capt. Gregory Dreibelbis. “Following established safety protocols, firing was suspended. No injuries occurred and the demonstration concluded as scheduled.”
The safety system worked exactly as intended. But instead of commending the Marines’ professionalism, Newsom seized on the incident to smear Trump again:
“We love our Marines and owe a debt of gratitude to Camp Pendleton, but next time, the Vice President and the White House shouldn’t be so reckless with people’s lives for their vanity projects,” Newsom posted.
Newsom’s tantrum wasn’t about “safety” — it was about his 2028 presidential ambitions. Since Trump’s 2024 landslide victory, the California governor has been picking fights with the administration to raise his national profile. From border disputes to National Guard deployments, he’s been trying to look like the anti-Trump candidate the left desperately wants.
As Vice President Vance put it:
“This idea that Gavin Newsom is somehow going to mimic Donald Trump’s style — I think that ignores the fundamental genius of President Trump’s political success, which is that he’s authentic.”
The Camp Pendleton fiasco was Newsom’s latest attempt to manufacture a confrontation — and he used the Marine Corps as his prop.
Despite Newsom’s interference, the Marines delivered a flawless performance. Vice President Vance honored their sacrifice, saying, “I would not be here today, I would not be the vice president of the United States, I would not be the man I am today were it not for those four years that I served in the Marine Corps.”
He also relayed President Trump’s message: “He’s proud of you, that he loves you, and that despite the Schumer shutdown, he’s going to do everything he can to make sure you get paid exactly as you deserve.”
That’s what true leadership looks like — honoring the men and women who defend our freedom, not exploiting them for political gain.
The Marines’ 250th anniversary should have united Americans in pride. Instead, Gavin Newsom’s petty politics turned it into a partisan stunt. But in the end, the Marines stood tall, reminding the world why they remain the most elite fighting force on earth — no matter what distractions come out of Sacramento.
