The United States Marine Corps marked its 250th anniversary with an unforgettable show of strength and patriotism — a once-in-a-lifetime event at Camp Pendleton that brought together thousands to honor America’s warriors. But California Governor Gavin Newsom couldn’t resist hijacking the moment. Instead of letting Marines celebrate their proud legacy, he turned the day into a political sideshow aimed at smearing the Trump administration and grabbing headlines.
Vice President JD Vance, himself a former Marine who served four years including a combat tour in Iraq, traveled to Camp Pendleton to commemorate the milestone. The celebration featured the largest amphibious assault demonstration on U.S. soil in more than a decade, complete with fighter jets, Navy ships, helicopters, and Marines storming the beaches in a breathtaking display of American military might.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth joined Vance at the event, which was being filmed for a national Veterans Day broadcast honoring generations of Marines who defended freedom at home and abroad. It should have been a unifying moment for the country. Instead, Gavin Newsom saw an opportunity — and pounced.
