The Journal reported that Shapley’s aim is to replace Guy Ficco as head of the investigations unit, giving the Trump administration greater ability to map out financial networks behind Antifa and other radical outfits believed to be fueling unrest in America’s largest cities. President Trump made clear he has full confidence in Bessent’s ability to lead the effort.
“Scott will do that. That’s easy for Scott,” Trump said during a recent cabinet meeting when asked about Bessent’s mission.
Bessent himself compared the upcoming investigative effort to the historic push to uncover the financial backers of the 9/11 terror attacks. In an interview with Andrew Kolvet on The Charlie Kirk Show, he explained, “We have started to compile lists of the other networks, and there’s a long record here.”
“This is mission-critical for us now. … We are operationalizing this here at Treasury. We are going to track down who is responsible for this,” he said, referring to the violent surge tied to radical leftist movements — including the Sept. 10 assassination attempt on Charlie Kirk.
Shapley, when approached by the Journal, did not deny the ongoing changes inside the agency. “I’m grateful to continue in my role in reforming the IRS,” he said.
The Treasury Department also weighed in, with a spokesperson noting that the administration is focused on improving both strategy and accountability. “The team’s focus remains collections, privacy, and customer service,” the representative said, while highlighting that private-sector best practices are being applied to overhaul the agency’s approach.
This aggressive new strategy reportedly follows earlier difficulties faced by the Trump administration in efforts to revoke nonprofit tax exemptions tied to left-wing political operations. By restructuring how the IRS investigates, the administration aims to close loopholes that have shielded progressive networks from serious scrutiny for years.
Trump has not minced words about who he believes is behind much of the chaos gripping America’s cities. Back in August, the former president directly pointed to the Soros network.
“George Soros, and his wonderful Radical Left son, should be charged with RICO because of their support of Violent Protests, and much more, all throughout the United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
In another fiery post, he added, “We’re not going to allow these lunatics to rip apart America any more, never giving it so much as a chance to ‘BREATHE,’ and be FREE. Soros, and his group of psychopaths, have caused great damage to our Country! That includes his Crazy, West Coast friends. Be careful, we’re watching you!”
With these remarks and the IRS’s internal shakeup, Washington insiders believe the political landscape could shift dramatically in the months ahead. Progressive groups that once assumed protection from scrutiny may soon find themselves facing audits, investigations, or worse.
What began as whispers of an IRS restructuring could very well escalate into one of the largest investigations of left-wing financial networks in modern history — and for some, the spotlight may soon be unavoidable.
