According to The Times, the probe centers on explosive findings by former Trump official Kash Patel, who uncovered thousands of documents linked to the Russia Hoax stuffed inside “burn bags” in a concealed FBI room.
Over the summer, Fox News confirmed that Patel and his investigative team discovered a previously unknown SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) inside FBI headquarters. Inside, they found troves of classified files that were slated for destruction.
Among those materials was the classified annex to Special Counsel John Durham’s report, which contained key intelligence underlying his investigation into how the Russia probe began.
Former CIA Director John Ratcliffe has since declassified that annex and sent it to Senator Chuck Grassley, who made it public. The revelations confirmed what many conservatives had long suspected—critical evidence about the Russia Hoax was being buried, not exposed.
Meanwhile, senior FBI officials who served at the Bureau’s headquarters are now under federal scrutiny in connection with the burn bag operation.
The investigation itself has not been without chaos. In August, Trump-appointed Interim U.S. Attorney Todd Gilbert, who was overseeing the case in the Western District of Virginia, was pushed out after refusing to remove a high-level prosecutor who reportedly dismissed the evidence as “flimsy,” according to The Times.
A new Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney has since taken over the case. But in a clear sign of internal resistance, entrenched career prosecutors in the same district have now turned to the press, attempting to undermine the ongoing investigation with strategic leaks.
The latest leak claims these prosecutors don’t believe charges should be filed.
“Career prosecutors at the Justice Department do not believe criminal charges are warranted from an investigation seeking to discredit an earlier FBI inquiry into Russia’s attempt to tilt the 2016 election in President Trump’s favor, according to people familiar with the matter,” The New York Times reported.
The leaks didn’t stop there. In another swipe, anonymous sources accused Kash Patel of personally directing the probe.
“One witness approached earlier this year was told the investigation was being conducted at the specific direction of FBI director Kash Patel,” The New York Times reported.
This is not the first time government insiders have tried to derail investigations into misconduct involving Comey or the FBI’s handling of the Trump–Russia probe. Leaks also surfaced ahead of Comey’s own potential indictment in the Eastern District of Virginia.
The coordinated leak campaign fits a familiar pattern: when investigations threaten Washington power players, the media gets “anonymous tips” to shape the narrative. This latest attempt appears aimed at shielding Comey, Brennan, and others from accountability over what may be one of the most explosive scandals in FBI history.
The DOJ investigation continues—despite the Deep State’s clear efforts to bury it.
