The President did not shy away from pointing out the irony. Democrats, who claim to champion working-class Americans, could end up being responsible for thousands of federal employees losing their jobs. Trump framed it as a consequence of their own obstruction.
He also blasted Democrats for prioritizing illegal immigrants over American citizens. “Our country can’t handle people who come into our country illegally, and they want to give them full health care benefits. They want to open the wall again. Can you believe it? I can’t even believe it,” Trump said. Looking directly at the failures of his opponents, he added, “They lost an election in a landslide and they don’t change.”
While Trump stressed that he doesn’t want a shutdown, he reminded supporters that good can come from it. “We’re doing well as a country, so the last thing we want to do is shut it down, but a lot of good can come down from shutdowns. We can get rid of a lot of things that we didn’t want,” Trump said, according to The New York Times.
That “good” may come in the form of shrinking a government workforce that has long been dominated by Democrats. “When you shut it down, you have to do layoffs,” Trump noted. “So we’d be laying off a lot of people that are going to be very affected, and they’re Democrats.”
Meanwhile, critical priorities like border security and immigration enforcement will keep running, even if other agencies are forced to close their doors. Politico confirmed that those programs will continue during the shutdown — a sign that Trump’s agenda will remain intact while the Left’s projects could face the chopping block.
Conservative leaders are already backing Trump’s approach. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich praised the strategy by pointing to a famous quote from Obama’s former Chief of Staff. “Remember Rahm Emanuel’s great quote: ‘You should never waste a crisis,’” Gingrich said. “Rahm Emanuel should be proud of the Trump team because they’re prepared to say, ‘Every day this is shut, we will find ways to pay for everything we want. We’ll find ways to eliminate everything you want. And we’ll do it legally.’”
Trump himself echoed that sentiment Tuesday. “The last person that wants to shut down is us,” he explained. But he also warned Democrats about what’s at stake. “Now, with that being said, we can do things during the shutdown that are irreversible — that are bad for them and irreversible by them. Like cutting vast numbers of people out. Cutting things that they like, cutting programs that they like.”
The message is clear: while Democrats see a shutdown as political theater, Trump views it as an opportunity. If Washington grinds to a halt, he intends to use the moment to slash government waste, secure America’s borders, and weaken the Left’s grip on the federal bureaucracy.
