A sitting member of the United States Congress has come under intense fire after making an eyebrow-raising statement on foreign soil — one that many Americans are calling unpatriotic and disgraceful.
Democrat Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois raised eyebrows and ignited a political firestorm this weekend while addressing a crowd at the Panamerican Congress summit in Mexico City. Instead of proudly representing the United States, Ramirez made a controversial declaration of loyalty to another country.
This weekend, I was honored to join progressive legislators from across the continent – our neighbors and friends – for the second Panamerican Congress in Mexico City!

“I’m a proud Guatemalan before I’m an American,” Ramirez told the audience.

The Democrat, who was speaking alongside left-wing officials from various Latin American countries, didn’t hold back in aligning herself more with Guatemala than with the country she was elected to serve. She kicked off her remarks by expressing pride in being surrounded by “progressive legislators from across the continent.”
“This weekend, I was honored to join progressive legislators from across the continent – our neighbors and friends – for the second Panamerican Congress in Mexico City!” Ramirez posted.
But her follow-up comments — namely her declaration of Guatemalan pride over American identity — didn’t sit well with citizens back home. Critics on social media erupted in fury, accusing the Illinois Democrat of abandoning her oath of office and disrespecting the very nation that gave her the platform she now uses to serve.
