According to reporting from The New York Post:
“LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers are under attack by the Trump administration and Zohran is going to stand up for them as Mayor,” a campaign spokesperson said in a statement to The Post on Monday.
Mamdani announced his proposal after participating in a Trans Community Town Hall last month, where activists and advocates reportedly pressed for more resources and protections.

A Deep Divide
While Mamdani frames the issue as protecting vulnerable communities, many critics see it as a dangerous overreach that disregards parental rights and the will of the electorate. Gender-affirming treatments for minors, which can include puberty blockers, hormones, and surgeries that irreversibly alter healthy body parts, have been fiercely debated across the country.
Opponents argue that procedures on minors are particularly controversial, especially since young people often cannot legally consent to many other life-altering decisions.
Indeed, recent polls and November’s elections suggest that Mamdani’s position falls well outside the mainstream. Gender-transition treatments for minors have become one of those political “80/20” issues, where a decisive majority of Americans oppose them. Yet Mamdani seems determined to champion the minority view.
A Response to Hospitals’ Retreat
Mamdani’s team claims that part of the reason for the new funding is that private hospitals in New York City have begun backing away from gender services for minors. They cite political pressure from Washington as the culprit.
“LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers are under attack by the Trump administration and Zohran is going to stand up for them as Mayor,”
the campaign insisted, repeating its stance.
It’s worth noting that the Trump administration, along with many Republican-led states, has taken steps to restrict gender-transition treatments for minors, citing concerns about long-term health effects, regret rates, and the ethics of allowing children to make life-altering medical decisions.
Political Gamble
Mamdani’s proposal is undeniably bold — and politically risky. While he’s betting that New York City’s liberal electorate will embrace his vision, critics warn that even in the deep-blue Big Apple, parents may balk at taxpayer-funded treatments for minors, especially surgical interventions.
His critics say Mamdani’s plan exemplifies how the far-left wing of the Democratic Party increasingly pushes ideas that clash with the broader public’s values. With a general election ahead, the question is whether Mamdani’s radical proposal will energize his progressive base or drive moderate voters into the arms of his opponents.
The Road Ahead
With the mayoral race heating up, Mamdani’s $65 million plan is likely to remain a flashpoint in debates, campaign ads, and media coverage. Whether New Yorkers are ready to bankroll gender-transition services — especially for minors — could prove decisive in the outcome of the city’s next election.
As the dust settles from the 2024 election season, one thing is clear: on issues like this, the divide between progressive activists and the majority of Americans appears wider than ever.
