Cruz’s reply? “I don’t know the population at all.”
That admission set the tone for what turned into a ruthless interrogation.
“You don’t know the population you seek to topple?” Carlson pressed, clearly stunned.
Cruz fumbled through a generic talking point, stating, “They are Persians, and predominantly Shia,” trying to regain composure. But Carlson didn’t let him off the hook.
“You don’t know anything about Iran!” Carlson shot back.
Missteps and Backpedals on U.S. Military Action
It only got worse for Cruz when he claimed, “We are carrying out military strikes today.”
Carlson immediately called him out, forcing Cruz to walk back the comment, clarifying that he was referring to Israeli strikes that America was merely supporting.
“You just said ‘we’ were,” Carlson reminded him. “This is high stakes. You’re a senator. If you’re saying the United States government is at war with Iran right now, people are listening.”
Cruz then accused Carlson of playing “gotcha” politics—but the damage was done. A top Republican Senator, openly advocating for war, couldn’t get the basics right. The moment underscored just how casually some lawmakers treat the idea of sending Americans into another foreign war.
A MAGA Civil War on Foreign Policy
But this wasn’t just an awkward interview—it was the public face of a deepening rift within the Trump coalition.
The Guardian notes that “prominent American isolationists – including Carlson, Steve Bannon and the House representative Marjorie Taylor Greene – argue that military intervention would betray Trump’s ‘America First’ principles.”
Meanwhile, pro-intervention voices like Cruz, Senator Tom Cotton, and Mark Levin are pushing hard for U.S. military engagement in the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.
Even Donald Trump himself has been pulled into the fight. After Carlson’s broadcast, Trump fired back on Truth Social: “Somebody please explain to kooky Tucker Carlson that IRAN CAN NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.”
Still, that hasn’t calmed the MAGA base. A recent YouGov poll showed that 53% of Trump voters oppose any American involvement in the conflict, with just 19% in favor. That’s a loud signal that many of Trump’s most loyal supporters are tired of wars that don’t benefit the American people.
“Fake MAGA” Faces Backlash
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took to social media to issue a blunt warning: “Everyone is finding out who are real America First/MAGA and who were fake and just said it because it was popular.” She added, “Anyone slobbering for the U.S. to become fully involved in the Israel/Iran war is not America First/MAGA.”
Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon echoed those concerns, warning that foreign conflict could derail Trump’s core priorities. “Middle East military involvement could distract from domestic priorities like mass deportations,” The Guardian quoted Bannon as saying.
Trump Ramps Up the War Talk
Despite warnings from his allies and base, Trump has not softened his rhetoric.
“Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” he declared in one Truth Social post. The next day, he added: “We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there – We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now.”
Trump has already moved more military assets into the region, including a second carrier group, as whispers of a direct strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities grow louder. The Iranian regime has responded with threats of “irreparable damage” should the U.S. intervene directly.
Who Does Trump Listen To—The People or the Swamp?
As the Middle East teeters on the edge of a broader war, Trump faces a critical decision: Will he continue down the path pushed by the GOP establishment—or will he heed the warnings of his base and the America First voices who helped fuel his rise?
Because if Ted Cruz’s performance is any indication, some in Washington are ready to push America into another war without even knowing what they’re fighting for.
This time, the enemy may not be in Tehran—it may be the cluelessness in D.C. that brought us endless wars in the first place.
