This Airport Let China’s Bioweapon In—And It’s BAD!

United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. stated: “The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals—including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party—are of the gravest national security concerns. These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into the heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme.”

Communist Funding and American Access

According to investigators, Jian was already conducting research on this exact fungus back in China—with financial support from the Chinese government. Her devices reportedly contained evidence of CCP allegiance, and she had established herself at a University of Michigan research facility.

Zunyong Liu, meanwhile, worked at a Chinese university and was involved in the same line of study. Initially dishonest with federal agents, Liu later admitted he smuggled the fungus into the U.S. with the intent to carry out “joint research” with Jian.

Director Patel wrote on X: “This case is a sobering reminder that the CCP is working around the clock to deploy operatives and researchers to infiltrate American institutions and target our food supply, which would have grave consequences… putting American lives and our economy at serious risk.”

Weaponized Academia: The New Battlefield

This case isn’t just about one lab or one couple. It’s about how the Chinese regime is turning American universities into staging grounds for bioterror.

Under the guise of academic research, Jian and Liu had nearly everything they needed: a strategic pathogen, a lab in the Midwest, and access to American infrastructure. What they lacked was secrecy—and the FBI caught on just in time.

“This isn’t just some mold,” one national security official commented. “It’s a biological weapon capable of catastrophic consequences.”

Fusarium graminearum, while sounding like a research topic, is anything but harmless. Its toxins can infiltrate grain-based food products—meaning bread, cereal, and even baby food could become silent killers. A coordinated deployment of the fungus could wipe out crops and poison millions.

FBI and Homeland Security on High Alert

“This case is a wake-up call,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office. “These individuals exploited their access to laboratory facilities at a local university to engage in the smuggling of biological pathogens, an act that posed an imminent threat to public safety.”

The university in question—the University of Michigan—has yet to explain how two foreign nationals tied to the CCP gained research access to a U.S.-based bio lab.

Meanwhile, U.S. Customs and Border Protection made it clear they aren’t taking this lightly. Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon warned: “Today’s criminal charges levied upon Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu are indicative of CBP’s critical role in protecting the American people from biological threats that could devastate our agricultural economy and cause harm to humans; especially when it involves a researcher from a major university attempting to clandestinely bring potentially harmful biological materials into the United States.”

A Warning to All American Institutions

Both Jian and Liu are now facing multiple federal charges—including conspiracy, false statements, smuggling biological material, and visa fraud. If convicted, they could spend decades behind bars.

But experts warn this case is likely just the beginning.

“Your FBI will continue working tirelessly to be on guard against it,” Director Patel emphasized, noting this isn’t an isolated case, but rather a glimpse into a much larger threat.

As tensions with the CCP rise and biowarfare fears escalate, the message is clear: no American institution—academic, scientific, or otherwise—should let its guard down.

With the CCP viewing food systems as fair game in its “unrestricted warfare” doctrine, every lab, every university, and every customs checkpoint must now ask: Who exactly are we letting in—and what are they really here for?
