56-44: Senate Blocks GOP Move to Boot Illegals Off Medicaid!

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Senate on Monday voted 56-44 to block a proposed measure that would have prohibited illegal immigrants from receiving Medicaid benefits, dealing a setback to conservatives seeking stricter limits on federal aid programs.

One Republican senator, Susan Collins of Maine, voted against the measure, joining the majority in defeating the provision. Meanwhile, four Democrats crossed party lines to support the proposal.

The vote took place during a marathon session to consider amendments to the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a sweeping legislative package under debate in the upper chamber.

The measure’s failure stemmed partly from the Senate Parliamentarian’s ruling that the provision violated the Byrd Rule—a procedural guideline that restricts the kinds of legislation that can pass with a simple majority under budget reconciliation. As a result, the proposal required 60 votes rather than a simple majority and fell short of that threshold.
