In court, Ames expressed “profound shame and guilt” for “this betrayal of trust, done for the basest motives,” claiming he was motivated by financial pressures. Yet he downplayed the scope of his damage, asserting that he did not believe he had “noticeably damaged” the United States or “noticeably aided” Moscow.
“These spy wars are a sideshow which have had no real impact on our significant security interests over the years,” Ames told the court, questioning the importance of intelligence networks maintained by world powers.
The day before his sentencing, Ames told The Washington Post in a jailhouse interview that his espionage was driven by “financial troubles, immediate and continuing.”
Ames began his treachery while assigned to the Soviet and Eastern European division at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, according to FBI records. He continued passing secrets while posted in Rome and after returning to Washington. During this time, the U.S. intelligence community struggled to understand why so many operatives were being compromised by Moscow.
His espionage overlapped with another notorious mole, FBI agent Robert Hanssen, who sold secrets to Russia in exchange for $1.4 million in cash and diamonds before his 2001 capture. Hanssen died in prison in 2023, further highlighting the scale of the Cold War betrayals.
Ames’s wife, Rosario, also became entangled in his schemes. She pleaded guilty to lesser espionage charges for assisting her husband and was sentenced to 63 months in prison.
Ames’s death closes the chapter on one of the most infamous acts of treachery in U.S. intelligence history. While decades have passed, the consequences of his actions still echo within the intelligence community, serving as a stark reminder of how a single individual’s greed can jeopardize national security and cost lives.
