As officers tried to manage the situation, Schaaf-Olson’s husband, Jason Olson — the parks and recreation manager for the Town of Chino Valley — arrived and made things worse. Instead of helping calm the scene, he repeatedly ignored police orders to stay back and even tried to pull his wife away from questioning.
Tensions escalated fast. An officer can be heard warning him, “I’m going to f—king throw you on the ground if you resist,” before taking him into custody. Olson was later cited for resisting arrest, interfering with a crime scene investigation, and obstruction of government operations. Schaaf-Olson herself was cited for “urinating or defecating in public.”
The fallout came swiftly. Just two days later, Schaaf-Olson sent her resignation letter to Presiding Judge John Napper, blaming “current physical, medical, and family circumstances.” In her statement, she wrote, “The Yavapai community deserves and has judges who are steadfast in their commitment to serving Yavapai County, considering current events in my life, I believe it would be difficult to honor this commitment. I have therefore decided to resign.”
WATCH:
Judge Napper accepted the resignation with professional restraint, saying, “I respect and appreciate Ms. Schaaf-Olson’s decision to resign. On behalf of the Yavapai County Superior Court, I appreciate the time that Ms. Schaaf-Olson has served our community and her willingness to remain in her position while the Court selects a new Pro Tempore.”
Schaaf-Olson’s final day on the bench was October 31 — a fitting end to what can only be described as a nightmare month for the now-former judge.
The scandal has left local residents stunned that someone tasked with interpreting the law could so publicly violate it. What was supposed to be a quiet night in Prescott turned into a viral embarrassment for Arizona’s judicial system — and a painful reminder that no one, not even a judge, is above the law.
For a woman who once wielded a gavel in the courtroom, the sound of police handcuffs clicking may have been the final verdict she never saw coming.
