In a surprising development today, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global emergency in response to a recent outbreak of monkeypox in Africa. The announcement, which comes less than three months before the U.S. presidential election, has already raised eyebrows and fueled speculation about the timing and motivations behind this decision.
According to CNN, WHO’s emergency “mpox” committee convened amid growing fears that a more lethal strain of the virus had spread to four additional regions in Africa. Since the start of 2024, over 17,000 cases and more than 500 deaths have been reported across 13 African countries, signaling a significant escalation of the outbreak that had previously been confined to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, received advice from an independent panel of experts who met virtually on Wednesday to discuss the situation’s gravity. Following their recommendations, Ghebreyesus declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the highest level of health alert under international law. The PHEIC designation is typically reserved for “extraordinary events” that pose a global health risk due to the international spread of a disease, necessitating a coordinated worldwide response.
